Habari from Nairobi
May 4, 2012
‘Habari’ means ‘What’s the News?’ in Swahili – and news is not the only thing being exchanged, troops! Junior ministers at Jubilee Primary school have been writing letters to children in Nairobi and Delhi, and sending all sorts of things across the seas: ideas, stories, questions, and tiny gifts hidden inside matchboxes. These gifts were sourced from places such as nature, the toy box, and the biscuit tin.
As well as getting stuck in with the important task of reviving this Lost Art of letter-writing, the children have also been busy designing the foundations of a working Global Children’s Postal Service. Rules so far include ‘Postboxes Will Dispense Free Sweets’, and ‘Every Monday All Children Will Receive a Letter to Cheer Them Up’.
