The Ice Cream of Horrors

Author: Year 8, King Solomon Academy

Illustrator: Gareth Hopkins

Pulling up to the driveway, Red Rum pressed the play button on his ice cream van; soon he would have the whole city at his knees. Red Rum knew this was his last day on earth, and his last chance. Tomorrow morning his mum would come and take him away to another planet. The weather was frantic.

Then a bunch of children came to the ice cream van, but they weren’t smiling, they were like zombies. Pale faces, their hands in front of them. They slowly staggered to the ice cream van in a trance with blood trickling down their faces from their mouths. With his best act he smiled out the window and he asked “Vould you like ein ice cream?”.

They melancholically took the ice cream without knowing that death awaited them. Their eyes were fixed on the ice cream and they started licking their lips.

Michael was stood at the other end of the street, staring at Red Rum, trying to figure out something from his expression. He saw the children getting closer, closer and closer to the ice cream van. He was wearing his ‘I love maths’ ear muffs so he couldn’t hear the hypnotic music. He had been grounded for a failure in an experiment in his bedroom.

Red Rum spotted Michael wearing his ear muffs, he turned up the music extra loud and came quietly out of the van and hid behind the lamp post.

The children ate the ice cream and dropped to their knees and Michael didn’t know what was going on…
