Our writing clubs offer local children an imaginative space to write

We provide writing and after-school clubs for children in our neighbourhood aged between 8 and 12. Attending weekly sessions will help them improve their writing, build confidence and have fun.

What happens at our writing clubs?

All forms of writing
Club members have written lyrics which professional musicians made into songs; created their own country with an embassy on Hoxton Street; had their stories made into beautiful picture books; written and distributed their own newspaper and much, much more.

We offer our club members the chance to get excited about all forms of writing, to be creatively inspired and work with professionals, and have their writing shared with and enjoyed by different audiences.

Benefits at school
Many club members feel that attending the club has helped motivate them in their writing at school.

I think my writing has changed. In school I have been getting better grades and have learnt how I can help other people with their writing. I think with a little bit of fun, it makes it a lot easier to write stories.

David, aged 11, Saturday club

The Institute of Education supports these young writers’ views in its three year study of the Ministry of Stories’ workIt found club members’ attainment compared very favourably to their non-attending classmates. See more about our impact here

Take part in flagship projects
Club members will get the opportunity to develop their writing skills across an exciting mixture of forms, styles and genres. They will see their work transformed into a high-quality product at least once a year, by participating in one of our flagship projects.

There are some very exciting projects in the pipeline, so sign up and ensure your child’s place now!

Catchment area
Due to high demand in our busy neighbourhood, we have to keep our offer very local.

Our holiday clubs and out of school activities are for children aged 8-13 who live or go to school in the immediate neighbourhood of the centre (within approx 500m).

If a child lives within 500m, or attends one of the following schools and is within the age range, we can offer them a place.

  • St John The Baptist C Of E Primary School
  • Shoreditch Park Primary School
  • Hoxton Garden School
  • St Monica’s Catholic Primary School
  • Randal Cremer Primary School
  • Virginia Primary School
What if I’m outside the catchment area?
We are occasionally able to offer places to children from outside the catchment area (but within Hackney, Tower Hamlets or Islington) if they are disabled, have special educational needs or are facing challenging circumstances. Please contact us on 020 7729 4159 to discuss this in confidence, if you think it could apply to your child.

We occasionally hold other clubs or projects that have different qualifying criteria. For details of what’s on and how to sign up, please watch this space.
